If you think about how much personal and financial information is kept on our laptops and PCs - from the names, addresses and 'phone numbers of our family and friends, to online banking accounts and even tax returns - it becomes apparent that if someone were to steal the computer (let alone "hack" it via the Internet) not only would we be in danger of, at best, identity theft or worse, financial loss ... so would our family and friends.
The best way to secure this data is a 'dual-level' system of biometric security and encryption. A number of new laptops come with fingerprint scanners which you may already be using, but is your most important data encrypted? Someone could potentially steal your laptop and remove the hard drive to get around the fingerprint scanner, any non-encrypted data would be easily accessible.
Biometric Security
'Biometrics' refers to methods for uniquely recognising people based on physical traits. Present technology comprises of fingerprint or iris scanning, although developments about to become available to individuals now scan the veins in the finger, rather than the fingerprint!

Encryption
All business, personal and financial data should be encrypted so that if your PC, laptop, external hard drive, USB flash drive or back-up discs are stolen no one can access the information. We recommend using encryption software to encrypt data to at least AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard).
This standard has been approved for use by America's federal departments and agencies to protect sensitive information and after the National Security Agency conducted a review and analysis of AES, the Committee on National Security Systems announced that the design and strength of AES-256 are sufficient to protect classified information up to the 'Top Secret' level.
